Sprains and Strains
This page will detail different types of sprains and strains our bodies can experience, and how to mend them.
It's common to overwork our bodies, resulting in various sprains and strains. Unfortunately, when these conditions occur, movement and mobility can become difficult. Though generally mended with rest and anti-inflammatory medication, if left unattended, injuries can worsen, leading to permanent damage.
Though hard to understand at times, we only get one body, meaning we need to take proper care of it. You shouldn't live with pain or discomfort – and now, you don't have to!
HOW IT OCCURS
From overusing our bodies at the gym to sustaining an injury, it's easy to experience a sprain or strain, which generally affects the muscles, tendons and/or ligaments. Those sport's activities and exercise are often to blame, a condition can stem from any type of sudden movement, activity or trauma.
From ankle sprains to muscle spasms, it's important to listen to your body's aches and pains. If a sprain or strain does occur, it will be necessary to determine the the type of injury in order to pursue the accurate treatment.
Sprain: When a sprain occurs, a ligament in the body has been injured. Ligaments connect our bones together, and become damaged when stretched too far from their position and/or torn. This harm usually takes place in the ankle, knee or wrist.
Strain: A strain affects both muscles and tendons, also occurring when stretched too far. Muscles and tendons can also tear, resulting in a strain.
Causes of sprains and strains are generally connected to an injury sustained during a sport (i.e. football, basketball, etc.), but may also form from slips, falls and other common accidents.
As with all other types of injuries and conditions, sprains and strains offer a myriad of symptoms.
Symptoms associated with sprains and strains include the following:
- Inability to Move
While you should be able to determine whether or not you've experienced a sprain or strain, you may need to seek medical assistance if symptoms and pain fail to subside.
Though simple, home remedies can often offer recovery and relief for most sprains and strains, there are cases when a doctor's involvement may be necessary.
For example, you may experience more serious conditions, such as: severe and constant pain, deformities, inability to walk or severe swelling. Specifically, if your limbs buckle or give away when you attempt to move them, you may be suffering from a more serious injury, in which a doctor will need to diagnose you before offering more appropriate treatment options.
Depending on your sprain or strain, and how painful the condition is, you may try one of the following home treatment options:
- Anti-inflammatory Medication
A physician may recommend physical therapy or surgery, but only in the most severe injuries.
